More on road fatalities and the like
I've found some data on road fatalities which I am too lazy to format and type out in the comments, so here is a C&P job:
| Road fatalities | Deaths per 100,000 pop. | Motor vehicles per1000 pop. | Deaths per 10,000 motor vehicles | GNP per capita ($USD) |
USA | 41,967 | 15.8 | 787 | 2 | 29,339 |
Japan | 9,942 | 7.9 | 669 | 1.2 | 38,264 |
Germany | 8,758 | 10.7 | 559 | 1.9 | 28,335 |
France | 8,080 | 13.8 | 524 | 2.6 | 26,409 |
Italy | 6,198 | 10.8 | 617 | 1.8 | 20,224 |
Spain | 5,483 | 14.0 | 488 | 1.9 | 14,509 |
UK | 3,598 | 6.1 | 408 | 1.5 | 20,946 |
Canada | 3,082 | 10.3 | 573 | 1.8 | 19,856 |
Portugal | 12,100 | 21.1 | 436 | 4.8 | 11,024 |
Greece | 2,068 | 19.7 | 497 | 4 | 11,688 |
Note that this is including pedestrians, but the point made about the horrendous driving habits of our Gallic chums is borne out
The relatively high number of road deaths in the United States is that car ownership is universal and that Americans spend more time in their cars than anyone else in the world. The distances they drive are far, far greater than the tiny distances people drive in Britain or Japan.

Who would have thought 50 years ago that in 2007 we would be half as rich as the Japanese.

If my maths is correct 436 / 4,000,000 * 100,000 = 10.9. That's not too hot. Although public transport is almost non-existant outside of Wellington. But that sounds like an excuse

"Although public transport is almost non-existant outside of Wellington. But that sounds like an excuse."
No. It sounds like excruciating grammar.
"Outside Wellington." That pretty much sums up where an entity is not, ie., in the environs of Wellington.
What does "outside of" mean? Does that make it more "outside". As in, you have "outside" and, for reeeeally outside, you have "outside of"?
I hate ignorant usage of the elegant construction of our beautiful language - or any language, come to that, except I don't have enough knowledge elsewhere to fly into a fit. Thank God!
Outside Wellington is correct. "Outside of" Wellington ...no.
This doesn't just apply to Wellington.

Potential danger from terrorists and earthquakes pale into the background when it comes to traveling around in Turkey. Turkey has the worst road accident record in the whole of Europe or the Middle East. There are 15 times more deaths from road accidents in Turkey than in Great Britain, and twice as many as Spain, which has twice the amount of traffic. Needless to say, Istanbul Tory strongly advises touists to these parts not to hit the roads.

from an earlier thread, but anyway.
Verity to suggest that becuase California has, by US standards, some strict gun laws that there is little road rage involving gun crime is not a logical argument.
I saw 9 homicides in 18 months, 5 from drive-by's. i doubt these were all figments of my imagination.
So my advice stands, don't cut people up on LA freeways, the price can be too high.

Maybe the gun control laws in NY explain why the drivers most certainly DO cut each other up. I didn't notice any signs of rage when said cut-up occured.
