Duplicate laws - or 'something must be done' dept
There is a new stature heading our way sometime soon, in all probability: the Emergency Workers (Obstruction) Bill, which will make it an offence to obstruct or hinder emergency service workers. More here.
Probably because of the idealised way I picture firemen, and come to that postmen, due to the books and so forth I read as a child I am still shocked (yes, that is the right word) when I read about attacks on them. However, I am not happy with the idea that there should be tiers of offences based on categorising the offended against. If this law does not do this, then it is either duplicating the existing laws on assault & battery, and / or is more an area for procedural tinkering rather than black letter law.

"Gang of youths" are attacking fireworkers?
In other words, Michael, Tom and Richard?
Or are Abdullah, Mohammed and Ali trying to oust infidels from Islamic territories?

Colin,
No indication per se, but it was in Telford, which is a very 'Middle England' town in the Midlands. Wholly (long term) home-grown anglo-saxon scum I imagine.
